Tracing
Tracing images requires exactly what it sounds like — the act of tracing or drawing on an image. You can use this technique in your image editing program to give it a handmade feel. You can use the trace tool, which comes in the Select toolbox.
The concept is pretty simple, but I’ll walk you through the whole process to make sure you’re successful.
Select the image you want to trace and then press Ctrl+T. The control-T keyboard shortcut opens the Select toolbox. The fly-out menu tells you what the tool does: It draws a selection on the image and allows you to fill, create a new layer, crop, or move the edges of the selection.
Draw a selection on the image of your choice. After you trace, press Ctrl+T again to close the fly-out menu.
In Figure 16-10, I traced the image in the lower-left corner using the selection tool. When I completed the tracing, I closed the fly-out menu and selected Unite from Layer to create a new layer.

Creating elements
Photoshop Elements is a powerful tool for creating images and applying elements to them. I show you how to add text to an image and use some other well-known elements such as frames and layers.
Adding text to an image
Text is an essential element to most images. If you have a business, you need an address on all of your print and Web materials. You may be creating a wedding registry or a feature for a small business. You need a text description that can be easily seen.
The best way to add text to an image is to use the Text tool. You can also use the Type tool (see the next section) or some of the other tools in the toolbox, but if you’re going to be spending a lot of time adding text to your images, using the Text tool saves time. You see the Text tool in the Font submenu, which is shown in Figure 16-11.

We have the situation where we have a simple system for a couple of JSP pages which we want to share state.
What we want to do is have a single Java class like

The reason for this is simply because this class is only used by our JSP pages. Another application might use a different JSPUI class which we don’t want to pollute just so it shares our page state.
We have been trying to use the ServletContext to store these static fields but the tomcat security manager refuses to grant us access to the context. Is there a canonical way to do this in JSPUI or does it have to be done using an ApplicationContext injected somewhere?
