The best way to describe this game is to compare it to a sports game. Or a football. Oh wait, it’s a videogame, so it’s a football videogame, which is a totally different kind of football videogame. Uprising combines an action combat game with the typical real-time strategy game. But that’s it. And that’s a big problem.

A lot of what makes this game interesting is that it does things differently. Some reviewers like this kind of thing. They like fresh air in a very old genre. Uprising doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does introduce a new spin. Others don’t appreciate the newness. They seem to want the Uprising to play like one of their favorite 3D shooters, like Uprising Gaiden, but it doesn’t.

Because this isn’t Uprising Gaiden, it’s a completely new, different game. It’s its own thing. Uprising tries to be many things at once: a turn-based strategy game, a 3D first-person shooter, a tank game, and it should be evident by now that it’s not as good as those other things, but it’s also not an awful game. That’s good. Uprising has done what it sets out to do well enough to be fun, but not good enough to be worth the purchase of yet another «traditional» real-time strategy title. If you’re looking for a fun game that doesn’t feel like one of those other games, this is the one to pick. That said, Uprising isn’t a bad game. I just wish there were more of it.

Gameplay is basic: Pick up resources, build things, and fight against other players. And a lot of other people. Uprising is not a massive RTS experience. It has a simple control scheme.

Building is where Uprising gets interesting. The first step is to pick up construction materials, which you can do from literally anywhere on the map, which is both more handy and fun than in previous games. Uprising also does away with single buildings, having you construct entire districts on the map, and instead of «buildings» being one or two cells long, they are much, much larger, being hundreds of cells wide. It gives the game a very nice, big feeling.
