other than the occasional winking toward the «wholesome» when a character is bemoaning the breakup of their relationship, the writers of the walking dead have paid little attention to the occasional bit of lighthearted banter that has been a staple of the genre’s best shows.

still, the show’s emotional pitfalls can sometimes make it hard to forget how much the walking dead can be at its worst. in «hounded,» for example, the writers had negan execute a female character, clearly just to see what would happen and how the audience would react. while that approach was not necessarily novel, we didn’t know that until the moment when the first graphic image of her dead body went up on the screen. had the show gone to that level of graphic violence in earlier episodes, it probably would have gotten the attention of the show’s fans, and maybe even the attention of the network.

the walking dead is at its best when it explores and examines its protagonists, whether it’s carol or morgan, rick or daryl, or even the voice of the dead inside alexandria’s head. instead of dealing with the character’s wants and needs, however, the focus often comes down to the big picture of the apocalypse, and when that’s the case, it’s not only the characters’ inner turmoil that feels unrewarding but the whole premise of the story as well.

the walking dead doesn’t work if it’s all about people making hard choices and having their hearts broken. it has to work in terms of the action, whether that’s the horror of people roaming the streets in search of food or the conflict of those who want to fight and those who want to live, and so the action must be interesting and full of tension. otherwise, it’s just another zombie show with a different premise.

as we enter the second half of the series, and the first half of the third season, a lot of things happen: sasha dies, people die, and the show itself slows down. if there’s one thing that can be said about the third season of the walking dead, it’s that it’s the most action-packed and cinematic it’s ever been. it’s also the first that does a good job of both building and breaking down tension in a satisfying manner, and it’s also the first that’s more about zombies than character growth. it’s also the first that shows that, while the show itself is about rick and the survivors, it’s about a lot more. from the very start of the first episode, we learn that there’s much more to the world of the walking dead than the main characters. while the folks in alexandria are trying to rebuild the city, we’re introduced to the story behind the story. we get to meet more of the walkers, and their motives. this season, the series promises to bring in the comics’ best-selling characters, including the governor (david morrissey) and the governor’s henchman, the scavenger. but the story comes first, and the characters will be able to follow it where it goes.
the walking dead is back. the undead are on the move. in the wake of the devastating events of ‘emancipation,’ rick and his group of survivors must flee the prison and find safety in a world that has changed and will change again. as the group’s numbers dwindle, tension begins to mount and rick must decide who to trust and how to move forward. but after encountering two new kinds of walkers in the woods, the group realizes that ‘there are many more of them than we thought, and they are coming for us.’
