If you have a scanner that allows you to use an image as a slide or transparency, a slide-scanning software program such as Scanomatic or IrfanView (see Figure 14-2) produces an image file from a slide or transparency. This type of software should be used with a slide scanner.

Grabbers: A _grabber_ is a special type of scanner that’s designed to look at pictures you can touch with a computer mouse or touch screen. It enables you to scan artwork, photographs, or anything you can trace.

A popular grabber is the Wacom tablet, which is like a big stylus. The image it creates looks like a painting, as shown in Figure 14-3. You can use the images you create with this type of software to create a page in a photo album or on your website.

Although this type of software is often expensive, it is an excellent solution to the problem of scanning artwork for digital images.

You can purchase a USB wireless or Bluetooth mouse and use it with a standalone Wacom Grabber.

Download the latest version of Photoshop Elements for your computer. If you are using Photoshop CC, it is recommended to download the latest version of Photoshop Elements as the latest Photoshop CC version has lots of improvements. If you have Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 you can use this installer instead.

Check if you are using Windows 7 or later with a 64-bit operating system because you need a 64-bit installer.

SWAT teams: Trauma team called off, shootout kills dog

A SWAT team converged on a southwest Houston home Thursday and found the suspect was dead.

The suspect, who hadn’t been identified by police as of early Friday, apparently had fired his rifle from inside the house.

A Houston Police sergeant and another officer, with the gun in a shoulder holster, gave chase, followed by multiple Houston police officers in SWAT gear.

The first officer threw a flash-bang grenade, and the sergeant shot the suspect, said police spokesman John Cannon.

The suspect and the officer were taken to a hospital. Cannon said the suspect died from his injuries. The wounded officer is in stable condition.

The officer shot his weapon, which is standard procedure for a police SWAT team, said Houston police Lt. Chris Wester, a spokesman for the department. The wounded officer and suspect were inside a house.

«We had a weapon,» Wester said. «We had to act on it.»

Wester said the wounded officer was not hurt as a result of the shootout and was treated by a medical helicopter for a non-life-threatening injury.

Police said it was a domestic dispute with a family member.

Cannon said there were no other suspects in the home.

This is the second domestic standoff and shootout that has resulted in the death of a Houston police dog, following the killing of a K-9 named Waco, which was mortally wounded in an officer-involved shooting last year.

City Councilman Dwight Boykins, who represents the Fifth District, said he was told that the officer was in the process of arresting the suspect when the shooting occurred.

Boykins said the suspect appeared to be a relative of the officer, but he didn’t say how close the officer was to the suspect when he fired. Boykins said the suspect was not a resident of the house.

«The officer had probable cause to make the arrest,» Boykins said, noting that police do not have to get permission from the suspect to arrest him.

«I’m going to be talking to the officers,» Boykins said.

The dog was named for their home neighborhood, said Boykins.
