Cornerback DJ Hayden is leaving the team following Monday’s game against the San Diego Chargers, a person familiar with the situation told The Chronicle.
The person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly, said a buyout package has been worked out with Hayden’s representatives. Hayden and the Raiders had been working on an extension for months.
Hayden, who signed a one-year, $6.5 million contract with the Raiders last August, said in August he hoped to be back in 2013.
The Raiders went with Sean Smith at the No. 3 cornerback spot on Monday, to the delight of Smith, who took all the credit for the defense’s late game-saving stand against the St. Louis Rams.
Hayden, 25, is the top cover cornerback on the Oakland roster, but is dealing with a balky knee and a couple of ankle injuries.
When the Seattle Seahawks needed a cornerback to fill in for the injured Brandon Browner – Hayden’s boyhood team – Seattle had no choice but to give him a chance.
He started the first two games of the season and started four before missing four more games this season.
Pro Football Focus, an independent site that grades the play of players, gave Hayden an overall grade of 56.3 in 2012. The site put Smith at No. 52 in 2012 with a grade of 61.8.
San Diego took a similar route in trading for Chicago Bears corner Alfonzo Dennard in the offseason. The Chargers brought Dennard along slowly and he could start his third NFL season by October.
Neither player was signed with a full-time starting job.
Hayden had little impact as a rookie in 2011 and then regressed last season.
“He had to come back from being lost last year,” said Thomas. “I’ve always seen him as a backup and not a starting corner.”
But the team’s top cornerbacks were forced into action – and proved unable to execute at a consistent level.
“Last year was not his first season as a pro
