For an Electron-based podcast player to work properly, you need to have NodeJS installed. Although the package has a simple installer, you’re expected to follow a few steps manually. This type of setup, however, is fairly common and thus not a major inconvenience.
After installing Reach Podcast Player and opening the executable, you’ll be greeted with a simple desktop window. Moreover, you can search for most common podcasts using the default search field. Simply type the name of the podcast you’re searching for and the results will display in reverse chronological order.
You can add the url of the podcast to this list as well. This way you can access all podcasts, even those you have not yet subscribed to.
As soon as the list is populated, you can click on a podcast and a window similar to the one above will appear, in which you can play, pause, resume, or select chapters. After tapping on these buttons, Reach places all the controls into the main window. This way, you can easily hide the podcast window.
Another option is to use the main window only. Buttons can be clicked and there are no additional controls. As mentioned earlier, Reach Podcast Player is free and open-source software. It’s entirely up to you to personalize its look and feel. All the basic settings can be adjusted from the main window. There are no options for podcast synchronization.
There is also no support for podcasts that require subscribing. If you’d like to access the web player, you can use another tool. The companion app appears directly in your Windows Start menu when the main one is running. This setup is a nice way of using Reach as a desktop application while still accessing the web player.
