Why there is a differance between strcpy and strncpy
I’m having a curiosity that when I’m writing a program there is difference between
strcpy(s, s1);
and
strncpy(s, s1, n);
I’m not using macro.
And I want to know why there is such a difference.
A:
In the first one:
If s already has the same size as s1, nothing happens
If s is smaller than s1, s1 is truncated
If s is larger than s1, spaces are added at the end
In the second one:
If s already has the same size as s1, nothing happens
If s is smaller than s1, s1 is expanded, no truncation (but may cause a reallocation, so the content may change)
If s is larger than s1, spaces are added at the end
Strncpy do not expand the source-string, you simply know the maximum amount of space you will use. It does not add any spaces.
So here, if s is already the same size as s1, nothing happens, if s is shorter than s1, you insert the contents of s1 inside s, but the extra spaces will be ignored. If s is longer than s1, you add a trailing NUL at the end.
A:
Strncpy may treat the source string as an input. This is not done by strcpy.
It is simple string copying. And isn’t efficient at all.
It is intended to be used with the input string as a whole, rather than a buffer.
A:
Are you sure your compiler is C99? C99 has a strncat function that allows expansion and returns the number of characters read instead of writing.
char s[] = «test»;
char s2[] = «testing»;
strncat(s, s2, sizeof(s));
gives
strncat(s, s2, sizeof(s)) = 6 ; s2 = testing
