The first thing you need to know about Photoshop is that it uses layers.
A layer is a separate object that you put on top of another layer, called a _background_ layer, on which you work. You work with layers using a new tool called Layers.
Layers have four modes. They are as follows:
* **Background:** A background layer is the first thing in your layers palette. Background layers are never visible and aren’t affected by any other layers.
* **Locked:** This layer mode locks a layer so that it can’t be modified. Locking a layer works the same as locking a document or a group; you can’t do any editing unless the layer is unlocked.
* **Normal:** If a layer is open in this mode, you can create and edit the image, and if necessary, you can add or delete layers.
* **Lock to Foreground:** This is the same as the normal editing mode, except that the layer appears as an overlay instead of a visible layer. (Think of a layer as a transparent thumbtack on top of your image.) When this layer mode is open, you can add and delete layers.
To modify a layer, you simply select the layer (it becomes outlined) and use the selection tools as you would normally use them, and you see the effect on the image, as shown in Figure 3-1.

To edit a layer, you can switch to the layer’s position in the Layers palette, or you can select the layer to edit it by using the Hand tool and dragging the image down into the Layers palette, as shown in Figure 3-2.
As you see in Figure 3-2, when you place your hand over a layer, it highlights the layer, enabling you to select the layer and use the selection tools for modification. Layers with many layers within them are a little complicated to select because you have to select the top-most layer in the Layers palette and then deselect the layers below it. In addition to the available basic features, Photoshop Elements also contains several additional features that traditional Photoshop has. These are:

Photoshop Elements has a built-in image-editing program called **_Photoshop Sketch_**.
Photoshop Sketch is a very simple graphics editor for creating fine-art drawings, illustrations, or icons. You can use it to create new images and modify photos.
Photoshop Sketch also has a built-in slide show with 4 transition types, 4 music tracks, 4 transition effects, a background color, and a built-in zoom feature.

Photoshop Elements features a built-in video editor that includes a recording feature that will allow you to record a short movie of you drawing or creating an illustration and then play it back.
You can preview the movie when you record it.
Photoshop Elements also features an integrated drawing feature. You can use it to create a sketch of any image or a frame from an image. You can then save the sketch as an image file.
Photoshop Elements has a built-in virtual desktop system. You can place multiple image files on your desktop and then use the built-in photo viewer to preview them.

To add a folder of images on your desktop, you click the folder icon at the top of the Photoshop Elements window and then choose Insert on Desktop. You can select individual images or folders to place on your desktop.

**NOTE** A virtual desktop is a program feature that many graphics-editing software packages offer. You can arrange your work by placing files on your desktop and then open files from the desktop.
You can use the built-in slide show and virtual desktop feature to set up a slide show with music from a music library or record a video of yourself designing.
You can view your image on a big screen using an external projector.

You can also make changes to your photo, video, or drawing in Photoshop Elements. You can draw on the images and change the background, color, and other image-editing parameters. You can make these changes directly in Photoshop Elements or you can export your image for use in a graphics-editing program that supports the Photoshop file format, such as Photoshop CS or Paint.NET.

The Refine Edge feature allows you to manipulate and edit the edges of elements on your image such as edges of a subject, text, or a logo.
The Crop tool is useful for selecting a portion of your image. You can then use the other features to edit or apply effects to that selected area.
The Eraser tool allows you to edit objects or images on your computer by deleting or eliminating them from your project.
The Draw tool allows you to add, modify, or remove layers within your document.
Most of these tools work automatically. You don’t have to click any of the tools once you have them loaded on your computer. The order in which you use the tools doesn’t matter. You don’t have to select any tool before you apply any other tool. Just think of all the functions you can do with the tools on your computer.
If you want to use more than just a single tool, such as the Pick Tool, select the tool in the Tools panel. Next, select the tool you want to use by pressing the left mouse button over the tool.
When you use the Edit Panel, you can highlight tools, colors, and settings, as well as a variety of other options. The next section covers how to make your own customized brushes and use the Brush Panel.
Highlight the tools you want to import into Photoshop by dragging them from the Toolbox to the Tools panel. You can then highlight a color by clicking the down arrow in the toolbar and clicking the color you want. Click Import to import the tools. You can only select one tool or color at a time.
To import a brush, select a brush in the brushes palette. Next, click the down arrow in the toolbar and select the image type you want to convert to the brush. Then click Import Brushes to import the brush.
To create a custom brush, select any existing brush or pen tool in the brushes palette. Then use the New Brush option in the Brush menu.
Adjust the size, hardness, and opacity of the brush as you wish. Don’t forget to name your brush.
Press Esc to reset the brush settings and return to the brushes palette. To open a custom brush in Photoshop, select it and click the Apply or Open button in the Brush panel.
To import a custom brush, select the Custom Brushes panel in the Brushes panel and click the Import button.
