The process of editing photographs should be fun. Like all the other programs in this chapter, Photoshop can be customized to meet the needs of your work, and the limits of your creativity. Experiment, but make sure that you save your work as you go so that you can restore a previous version.
Understanding the Photoshop Editor
In addition to offering all the features of a typical raster editor, Photoshop offers a number of special features, including layer-based editing, the ability to work directly on an image’s colors, easily creating content-aware masks, integrating Photoshop with other programs, and hiding features that are not needed.
The place to start in understanding Photoshop’s features is the Photoshop window, shown in Figure 18-1. Working in Photoshop involves using the menus, toolbars, palettes, and windows to perform editing operations. In this chapter, we cover all the tools and effects. Each section walks you through the various tools and contains two or three examples. A full list of the tools in the Photoshop standard toolbar is provided in Table 18-1.
You can access the toolbars by clicking the little triangles to the left of the name of the tool. You see the example shown in Figure 18-1, with the tools on the standard toolbar displayed. To expand or collapse the menu bar in the bottom of the window, click the little triangle to the right of the magnifying glass at the bottom of the window.
In this chapter, we give you a tour of Photoshop’s top-level editing windows. If you find yourself working in a new file, you might start by taking a look at the window that appears when you open a new file.
The Photoshop window
In addition to the tools that we cover in Chapters 10 through, we cover the top-level editing windows used to create a number of common Photoshop projects. Most of these windows appear when you open a new file, but some of the editing options are part of the Options dialog, as well as a few of the standard menus.

After installing, it is presented to you with a screen that requests your sign-in credentials to authenticate the app. Sign in, and then you can open the Image Browser to go to the action you wish to perform. If you don’t have your sign-in credentials, the app will automatically open the settings menu to get those. You can also sign in to the Microsoft account that you have with the app to keep things sync’d.
I recommend you sign in, but you can still opt to not sign in. The sign-in info does not get stored unless you choose to sign in, though I think you could delete the app if you are not signed in, but I am not 100% sure of that.
You will want to use the RAW or RAW+JPEG images as they are automatically sized the right size for you. Below the RAW tab, there is an option to enable the Index Color layer, which can help prevent some transparency problems. The button to turn the Index Color layer on or off is to the right of the tab, as well.
When you go to the RAW tab, there is a setting in the Advanced section that chooses to see color in black and white or color in light and dark. Make sure that is the setting that you want, as it can affect some of the colors. While black and white should look the same on every monitor and your computer display, this can be quite a difficult thing to get right depending on the type of monitor and settings.
To the far right of the RAW tab is the crop tab. This allows you to crop the image if you wish, in addition to turning the Index Color layer off and choosing what details you want to see. There is a settings button to the left of the tab, and the settings are self-explanatory.
Moving to the editing tab, there is an option to adjust highlights and shadows. If you have a light and bright image, you may need to increase the amount of shadows in the image to reduce the light falloff, or reduce the amount of shadows in the image to reduce the falloff. You can increase the strength of the shadows, the amount of highlights, or the midtones. Shadows are the dark area on the picture. Highlights are the lighted area on the picture. Midtones are in the middle of the picture, and change the way the pixels look from transparent to solid. You can adjust the saturation,
