The Li and Ramírez papers, however, demonstrate that modified, reduced-expression versions of HIV-1 can be packaged into particles that can be transported in the bloodstream and gain access to the lymphatic system, which allows these viruses to escape from the low, hostile environment of the body’s defenses.
A cell infected with HIV (green in this picture) typically produces 20 to 50 new virus particles per day. If enough cells are infected with the virus, they gradually exhaust the available cell resources. This is why HIV is not curable; it, and the body’s virus-fighting defenses, are ultimately defeated by the virus.
Obviously, suppressing viral expression means that the viruses can’t multiply and spread. The authors of the papers don’t specify exactly how they plan to suppress the viral gene expression, or which cells will be genetically modified, in their gene therapy experiments. On the face of it, however, the best candidates for suppressing the HIV gene are the cells that produce virus. Among all the cells of the body, the CD4+ T cells are the ones that produce the most virus. (It’s the CD4+ T cells that HIV targets when it infects a cell.)
I think it is very likely that the CD4+ T cells will be targeted. But the whole point of this research is to suppress the expression of the HIV genetic material in cells that don’t produce the virus. And it’s possible that the suppression might actually be
