Ottawa Traffic Cams is a Konfabulator Widget that displays the still images supplied by the Ontario Ministry of Transport (MoT) COMPAS Traffic Cameras web site for Highway 417.
Highway 417, also known as The Queensway, is the main east-west traffic artery for Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. The MoT currently uses eleven cameras on Highway 417.
The Ottawa Traffic Cams Widget accesses each camera in sequence from east to west.
Now you can view and monitor the traffic right from in front of your computer.

Preference settings control how long each image is shown before advancing to the next traffic camera.

If you wish to view current Ottawa weather conditions, there are preference options to show the temperature on the image and detailed weather information in the tooltip.
If Ottawa gas prices interest you, a preferences option shows the best local gas price as reported by OttawaGasPrices.com. (Gas prices are in cents per liter.)
If weather or gas price info is selected, the latest data will be retrieved whenever you ‘save’ the widget preferences.
Local Ottawa weather data, obtained from the NOAA weather service or Environment Canada, is from the Ottawa International Airport.

The MoT has placed eleven traffic cameras along Highway 417 from Bonnechere Trunk to Austin Road.
The total length of the Highway 417 cameras is 1.8 km. The distance between the cameras is approx. 60 meters.
Installation of each new camera currently takes approx. 15 minutes and installation of each existing camera currently takes approx. 20 minutes.
The current Highway 417 traffic cameras are generally installed on Sunday, Thursday and Saturday.

Everybody has been ordering a road helmet for their son or daughter who wants to cycle the ‘pavements’, for years.
In the latest test of a cycling helmet, a survey of 584 cyclists put a trauma helmet, even though the cyclists said they already wore helmets when cycling, on three times as many injuries as the ‘old thing’ that they’ve been accustomed to for years.
However, like all cycle helmets, even these new ‘premium’ helmets were limited in their ability to prevent head injuries; a fact that’s been known for years.
What’s the use of a helmet that doesn’t do anything to prevent a neck injury or a severe impact in the head, especially when the most common side-effects of cycle helmets are things like headaches and dizziness. (Ottawa Citizen, Oct. 26, 2001)
