The other day, Brett Fike, a just-graduated senior at Regis University, was passing by the fire station in Boulder, on the University of Colorado campus, and he was struck by its emblazoned logo: The group was recruiting members.

«I was like, ‘There’s more to life than this,'» the junior said.

Fike is gay, and the group, Boulder County Fire Protection District 15, is part of his life. But for now, he’s intent on picking up a uniform and trucking around town, one of nearly 40,000 Americans who are trained as volunteer firefighters.

«I’m just really passionate about serving my community,» he said.

Boulder was the birthplace of the modern environmental movement, but now Boulder is trying to shake its reputation as a tree-hugging, coal-burning city. Two years ago, the city boosted its minimum wage to $12.50 an hour. Since then, it’s passed a domestic partnerships law for its gay residents, and legalized recreational marijuana.

It’s about time. Boulder County’s population has ballooned, from the area’s starting point in the 1950s, when a few dozen residents lived in a cluster of houses at the foot of the Flatirons, where the university now is. By 1990, the population was up to 34,000, although those numbers have been fluctuating lately.
