when you insert the bootable dvd and start the installer you will be prompted to choose the ‘installer’ option, if you are installing with a dual boot you can also select the ‘advanced’ option and make any changes you like. the next step you should make is to create a new partition, this is fairly straight forward in my experience (although i have only done it with the iatkos installer – i have not tried the other two) but i will have a look at the other installers and guide you through this step.
after you have selected the partition where you wish to install you will be prompted to create a volume group, you will be given a choice of many different options but i suggest the’manual’ option as it is the simplest. after you have chosen the volume group you will be prompted to create the logical volumes you wish to use for your operating system and any other files that you wish to use. once you have chosen the volume types and attached them as you wish you will be prompted to choose where you wish to install leopard and finally give the system a name and password.
you may be prompted to install additional software, this is normal and will only be a small amount of software that will be required to get the system running (i have had problems with leopard not detecting some of the software that was installed in my older install and this is why i always make sure to have some kind of backup before installing any new os). once you have installed the software you will be prompted to reboot the system and you should be greeted with a login screen, at the login screen simply enter your desired username and password.
Let’s begin… Update: (Nov 6 2009) Now that the new 10.6 Snow Leopard has been released you can use a combo installer bootable disk that will install Leopard 10.5.2 using the same installer disk and give you a dual boot system that will boot both Leopard and Snow Leopard. There are two versions of the installer available (Leopard 10.5.6 and Mountain Lion 10.8) and the different versions are simply a matter of the hardware you have at hand. For example the Intel-iMac are the only mac models that can use the Mountain Lion installer and I’ve tested it on PPC, Intel Mac, and Windows. It works with all Mac hardware and all hardware can dual boot.
