Bruce Morgan (born April 13, 1946) is an American actor, singer, and songwriter, who was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards and one Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in The Shawshank Redemption.
On February 22, 2020, Morgan announced his retirement from acting.
Early life
Morgan was born in Emporium, Pennsylvania. His father was a steelworker and his mother was a homemaker. His parents divorced when he was a year old.
Morgan graduated from the Emporium High School, in 1965, where he played the saxophone and trumpet in the school’s jazz band, and he had a lifelong interest in jazz.
He was expelled from Emporium High School in 1968 for smoking marijuana.
Career
Morgan began his career as a session musician, playing guitar and keyboards in the recording studio and as a performer on stage. In his early twenties, he had a short-lived singing career, performing the hit song «I Want to Take You Higher» for a concert tour, as a member of Sonny & Cher.
He played the role of pianist/composer in the Off-Broadway production of The Fantasticks, in 1979. He was a featured performer in the original cast recording of «Lady, Be Good!» which he co-wrote with his sister, Andrea.
Morgan appeared in several off-Broadway productions, before the advent of the film industry. He appeared in the short film, Showtime, directed by Ed Harris, which won a Young Artist Award in 1979. In 1983, he starred in the film The Shawshank Redemption, as Timmy, a con artist who is befriended by an incarcerated bank robber (Morgan Freeman) with whom Timmy had played. His performance in the film earned him a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, as well as a Golden Globe Award nomination.
Morgan began doing voice-over work in commercials, and in 1983, he voiced the animated character of Tyrone Slothrop in the Oscar-nominated Peanuts series, A Boy Named Charlie Brown, which earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film.
In 1990, Morgan played the part of controversial science fiction author Zenna Henderson in the biopic A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, which was directed by Harold Ramis. He again
