Early history
AutoCAD was initially developed by Norman L. Hubbard, Senior Technical Staff (Graphics) and Randy Kidd, Senior Technical Staff (Interactive) at AutoDesk, the software development division of the Simula company.
The early history of AutoCAD is shrouded in controversy and speculation.
In his blog post, «When AutoDesk Got Hacked», Simon Smithson writes, «It is unknown if this famous AutoDesk hack was the work of the hackers themselves or if someone else sent them the disks in the hope of collecting a ransom. Either way, it’s good that they did it, because it gave AutoDesk the chance to secretly put AutoCAD 1.0 on the market without having to do a lot of explaining. They could have even charged for it, but instead they just made it free. It is believed that AutoDesk charged the hackers a few thousand pounds for ‘exclusive rights’ to AutoCAD 1.0. There were only three main CAD packages at the time: Topo!, Solid, and AutoCAD. To us, all three of these were extremely limited versions of AutoCAD.»
The program was developed under the name of Esoteric Software (ESO) from the year 1981 to 1985. Esoteric Software was an independent software company from Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The first AutoCAD, as it is known today, was released on December 10, 1982, on floppy disk. The original release was released as a shareware application, which automatically upgraded to a full version after the first year. The first free version came out on December 22, 1984.

History
Autodesk was founded by John Walker in 1980 and started selling the first of its architectural software tools, AutoCAD, in 1982. AutoCAD was originally distributed only on floppy disks and had a primitive GUI, but over time it was improved. In 1989, the Microsoft Windows operating system was released and it was integrated into the AutoCAD product, which enabled the software to run natively on the Microsoft Windows platform. In 2000, Autodesk acquired CorelDRAW, a graphics software developer. A new version of CorelDRAW, CorelDraw Graphic Suite, was released in 2001. Autodesk acquired the software developer Easy CAD Systems in 2003. Autodesk has a number of applications and products under different brand names and license types, such as AutoCAD, DGN, Fusion 360, and TinkerCAD.
Autodesk provides two main versions of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT for limited functionality, and AutoCAD Professional for more complex applications. Both products run natively on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
