Adabes markets Photoshop Elements as the alternative for those without a big budget. Elements has many of the same features as Photoshop but lacks the power and robustness of Photoshop. Professionals, however, should avoid Elements for most purposes.

Illustrator

Adobe Illustrator is part of the Creative Suite for serious designers and is available for Windows and Mac. It’s often considered the main program in the suite, but Photoshop is the name-recognition and worldwide leader.

In the figure, the logo was created using the Shape options in the Draw panel of the Pathfinder palette and then applied to the drawing area. The gradient is applied to the surface of the graphic. More details about this process are discussed in Chapter 17.

Illustrator doesn’t enable you to edit a raster image. However, you can use layers to mask layers to create very sophisticated effects. To do so, use the Layers panel, as shown in Figure 2-13.

Illustrator uses different tools for working with and creating vector drawings than the older layers-based programs of the 1990s (such as Illustrator 7). As a result, you can edit an image and then apply styles without affecting the other edits. You can even work directly with pixels and even create raster images that can be saved as PDF files.

Illustrator can be expensive, but the versions provided with the Creative Suite are more affordable than versions you find available on their own. For example, an entire set of Creative Suite for Mac with Adobe’s filters costs approximately $1,400. You can find a well-used copy of Illustrator at a local or online library.

Illustrator also offers an online web-based version that you can use for one-time use without having to install the application on your computer. You can also use the Web Essentials or Internet Explorer tools to make Illustrator files accessible via the Web.

Although cortical cholinergic deficiency has been proposed to contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), evidence for this is conflicting. Cortical AChR loss was common in AD-vulnerable regions of the medial temporal lobe, which included entorhinal and perirhinal cortex.
