1. Start Photoshop. If you don’t already have a document open, create a new document by selecting New from the Image menu and choose Photo. If you create a new document, use the Photoshop canvas window with a size and resolution appropriate for your project.
2. **In the Layers palette, create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer icon in the bottom-right corner of the palette and selecting New Layer**. This creates a new layer below all the layers in your current document.

This indicates how the image is constructed; white indicates the background, gray to black indicates the parts of the image that are hidden. If you drag the layer below the layer you just created, you’ll see a layer mask appear, but the mask itself won’t be visible.
4. **Double-click the layer to open its Properties palette**.
The Properties palette is full of tools you can use to manipulate the appearance of the selected layer.
5. **Use the Gradient tool to add a gradient to the layer**.
Your photo will look different if you use different shades of a gray, but you can create an entire gradient instead. The Gradient palette, shown in Figure 9-9, is divided into tabs for creating a range of different effects for your selected layer. The Gradient tool works just like a brush, and you can choose both color stops and create straight or curved gradients for your image. To start, choose the Brush tool, select the Gradient tool, and then click the canvas to select a color in the palette or click the slider to move the color until it’s exactly the right hue and saturation.

Adobe Photoshop Elements is not an alternative to Adobe Photoshop. It is a separate, yet similar program. It is not optimized to be used with images taken with an iPhone. It can still be used for non-iPhone photography. However, it is not an ideal program for editing images taken on iPhones.
However, some features of Photoshop Elements are better than in Adobe Photoshop. Elements supports the same object types as Photoshop. This is a more useful feature for Elements, because most users don’t own an iPad. Photoshop Elements allows you to open files in Photoshop Camera Raw, but Elements is not as powerful or as fast as Photoshop Camera Raw. Photoshop Elements is not optimized for smartphone photography.
However, Photoshop Elements has some features not found in the free version of Photoshop. You can use the Clone Stamp feature in Photoshop Elements. However, it is not as powerful as the free features found in the more expensive programs, such as the Healing Brush and Spot Healing Brush found in Photoshop.
Adobe Photoshop is not the only option for editing images. There is also the GIMP, a free photo editor, which is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Google and Apple

The Adjustment Layers dialog is used to create layered effects. You can use the settings to create a watermark, sepia tone, halftone, etc.
You may find it useful to use masks for some effects. For example, you could create a mask that is used to overlay a handwritten tag on a photo.
Paint mode is used to create layers in Photoshop that are not used for image editing, but as masks. This allows you to use the brush tool without damaging the image.
Photoshop has a wide selection of effects, which can be used to enhance photos. These effects are created using layers, as illustrated below.
