If you arent sure whether or not the recall process applies to your vehicle, contact the manufacturer. Theyll tell you if your vehicle is under recall. If it isnt, you wont have to pay for any of the repairs. If its under recall, youll have to pay for the required parts.

You can also schedule a recall service, which you can do at any dealer or by calling 877-922-9737. Scheduling a recall service means that the manufacturer has already made arrangements with your particular dealership.

Also, keep in mind that many retailers of recalled cars offer loans on the vehicles for up to 60 days during the recall process. The time allotted for the recall should be disclosed on the sales receipt.

You cant get into the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) database. Thats a good thing, because every car is different and there would be lots of people who would have to pay for a recall. However, some states, like Texas, do have the car database, which is exactly where you should go for this kind of information. Go to your state Department of Motor Vehicles website and search for the car youre interested in.

All of this information is available on the NHTSA website, as are a whole bunch of other recalls that arent specifically listed here. We highly suggest that if your vehicle is involved in a recall, you call your dealer to find out what parts and/or warranty coverage you qualify for.

The recalls dont get any easier. If your vehicle is involved in a safety recall, then the repair can be performed at the dealership. If it isnt, then the dealer should be able to perform the work. And if your vehicle is not involved in a safety recall, you can still buy it from a dealer.

In the case of a recall, the manufacturer is required to provide a schedule detailing the date that the repairs will be completed. Some manufacturers are more proactive about this than others. If you havent found out when the repairs will be completed, you should ask the dealer as soon as you leave the dealership. If you drive a long distance, you might try calling the manufacturer first. Ask them when you can expect the repair to be completed and find out if they have one of their own mechanics perform the repairs in your case.
Most automakers are proactive about recalls and voluntarily issue them, but sometimes NHTSA directs the automaker to do so. Some recalls get a lot of press, as with high-profile recalls relating to airbags in the last few years, but more often, recalls happen without much fanfare. Recalls are only issued in cases where the vehicles safety is in question, but that doesnt mean youre in immediate danger. Even so, you should have the repairs done as soon as you can. The good news is that, in case of a recall, the automaker has discovered a fix and that fix is available at no cost to you (except, perhaps, for the hours the vehicle is being repaired).
