The three, ages 17, 16 and 13 at the time of the attack, were arrested in the violent confrontation that ended with a teacher injured. The victims and other students were questioned at a police station, but no charges were filed.

The school and superintendent were not named in the lawsuit but released police reports to NJ.com that provided more detail about the incident.

The office of the district’s attorney, Philip E. Wolgin, said he consulted with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, a federal agency, and the Police Department before settling the case.

“The District is pleased to have resolved this matter and can only hope that the incidents of violence can be prevented from occurring in the future,” said Wolgin.

The police reports described two students who were in a central corridor of the school when a group of other students approached and one of the boys, identified in the documents as X2, put a gun in his pocket. He said it was loaded with two “dummy” rounds.

A classroom aide then witnessed that a 15-year-old male, identified in the police report as “X1,” had a gun in his pocket, which the aide described as “being fully loaded.” “The teen states he thought the gun was unloaded,” the report said.

As the students, who were in the class of the wounded teacher, walked towards the class where X1 was, X2 pulled a gun and the two exchanged fire.
