The first version of AutoCAD was a bitmap-based drawing program with no layers and no nested objects. It was also limited to the resolution of the local graphics system. Each drawing was assigned a file name. If a drawing already existed, AutoCAD would automatically assign that name. The drawing software consisted of two main components: the drawing area and the display area. The display area allows the operator to display the drawing, and the drawing area is where the operator works with the drawing. The display area included menus, palettes, and other application elements.

The software was introduced as Autodesk Display Extension (ADE), which allowed drawing images to be displayed on top of a form field display or other GIS.

An early version of the program was run on the Digital Equipment Corporation PDP-11 in 1982. Early versions of AutoCAD had to be run under DOS, which makes the program less user-friendly than other modern programs.

AutoCAD was first released for microcomputers with internal graphics controllers in 1982. It was originally called DesignCenter or AutoCAD. It was developed by Autodesk’s New York–based subsidiary and later spun off as a wholly owned subsidiary. In 1984, Autodesk rebranded the program to AutoCAD for Micros. In 1987, the program was rebranded once again as Autodesk CAD Software, and in 1990 it was relaunched with a new name, AutoCAD. The name «AutoCAD» came from the first letters of the first words in the first line of the product announcement: «Auto Computer-Aided Design Software.» The product is named Autodesk because Autodesk is the former company name for Autodesk Inc., which is the corporate successor to the software developer.

AutoCAD is the main product line of Autodesk and is one of the most popular software tools for the design of 2D and 3D architectural and engineering drawings, 2D and 3D schematic diagrams, and technical illustrations, 3D models, digital content, and web pages.

It can be used for both commercial and personal projects, and it is the backbone of the Autodesk franchise. The software is considered by many to be the leading desktop CAD application for the drafting industry. Its vast array of tools have made it the industry standard. This is especially true for architects and engineers who use Autodesk’s AutoCAD software in their projects.
